Mitsubishi Electric Opens ₹2,100 Crore Air Conditioner and Compressor Plant Near Chennai

Japanese electronics major Mitsubishi Electric has commissioned a new ₹2,100 crore manufacturing facility near Chennai for producing room air conditioners and rotary compressors, strengthening its presence in India’s fast-growing cooling market.

The state-of-the-art plant, located in the Oragadam industrial area, spans 50 acres and has an initial annual capacity to make 1.2 million room air conditioners and 2 million compressors. The facility will supply both domestic demand and export markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

The project is expected to create around 2,000 direct jobs and many more in the local supply chain. It will produce inverter-based, energy-efficient air conditioners and high-efficiency compressors designed for India’s hot climate and rising power costs.

Mitsubishi Electric said the plant reflects its long-term commitment to India, where demand for air conditioners continues to grow rapidly due to urbanisation, rising incomes, and hotter summers. The company plans to gradually increase local value addition and expand the product range in future phases.

The new facility is a key part of Mitsubishi Electric’s strategy to make India a major manufacturing and export hub for its climate control business in Asia.
