Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced a $1.26 billion investment to expand its alumina refinery in Odisha.
The company will allocate Rs 11,500 crore towards the alumina refinery project in Rayagada district. This forms part of a larger Rs 37,000 crore investment plan in Odisha and contributes to the group’s overall growth capital expenditure of Rs 55,000 crore across India.
Hindalco plans to increase alumina production capacity through the expansion. The move supports the company’s integrated operations that link bauxite mining, alumina refining and primary aluminium smelting with downstream manufacturing.
Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said India’s manufacturing growth depends on integration, value addition and sustainability. He added that Hindalco is building a fully integrated aluminium ecosystem from upstream resources to high-value downstream products.
The alumina refinery expansion will process bauxite into alumina, a key raw material for aluminium production. The project includes plans for sustainable operations and forms part of efforts to meet rising domestic demand for aluminium in sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and packaging.
The broader Odisha investments include a Rs 21,000 crore expansion of the aluminium smelter at the Aditya complex in Sambalpur. This will add 360,000 tonnes per annum of primary aluminium capacity and double the site’s smelter output to 720,000 tonnes annually. The company has also commissioned flat-rolled products and battery-grade aluminium foil facilities with a combined capacity of 170,000 tonnes per annum at an investment of Rs 4,500 crore.
These projects are expected to generate more than 15,000 additional direct and indirect jobs in the state. Hindalco’s existing operations in Odisha already employ nearly 23,000 people.
The investments strengthen India’s position in the global aluminium industry. The country aims to expand domestic production capacity to reduce import dependence and support manufacturing growth. Odisha, with its rich bauxite reserves, has emerged as a key hub for aluminium production in India.
Hindalco Industries is one of the world’s largest aluminium companies by revenue. It operates across the full value chain from mining and refining to smelting and downstream products. The Aditya Birla Group has a long-standing presence in Odisha, with cumulative investments exceeding Rs 25,000 crore in the state over the past 15 years.
