Hitachi Energy India will invest around Rs 2,000 crore to build a new large power transformer manufacturing plant in Karjan, Vadodara district, Gujarat.
The company announced the project on Thursday. The facility will focus on Large Power Transformers, or LPTs. It is scheduled for completion in financial year 2028. Once operational, the plant will produce a significant volume of power transformers each year. These units will support high-voltage transmission, HVDC links, power generation, AI data centers and large industrial projects.
The investment will create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. It will also support local skills development and economic growth.
N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India Ltd, said: “This investment reflects our confidence in India’s energy future and the country’s growing stature as a strategic manufacturing base. By expanding our manufacturing presence, we aim to empower local communities, create skilled jobs, and deliver innovative solutions that support the country’s energy and sustainability goals.”
Bruno Melles, CEO of the Transformers Business Unit at Hitachi Energy, added: “India is one of the fastest-growing energy markets globally. This new factory will strengthen our ability to serve customers locally while contributing to the nation’s self-reliance and infrastructure development.”
The new plant will use advanced manufacturing technologies. It will follow the highest standards for health, safety and sustainability. The site is planned to achieve LEED certification. It will emphasise energy efficiency, responsible use of resources and lower environmental impact. The facility will operate as a fully digital plant with smart systems and end-to-end connectivity for better quality and productivity.
This move comes as India needs major upgrades to its power grid. The Central Electricity Authority has estimated that the country requires Rs 7.93 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure investments. These investments will help integrate more than 900 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2035.
The new factory will complement Hitachi Energy’s existing transformer production sites in Gujarat. It will also work alongside insulation and components plants in Mysore and Halol. The project supports the government’s Make in India initiative through local manufacturing and supply chain growth.
Hitachi Energy has operated in India for 77 years. The company is a global leader in electrification technologies and grid solutions. It continues to expand its manufacturing base worldwide to meet rising demand for reliable power infrastructure. The Vadodara plant forms part of this larger effort to support a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system.
