NHAI Launches Rajasthan’s First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System on Delhi–Jaipur NH-48 Corridor

National Highways Authority of India has launched Rajasthan’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system at the Daulatpura Toll Plaza on the Delhi–Jaipur section of National Highway 48.

The system went live as part of NHAI’s efforts to modernise electronic toll collection. It allows vehicles to pass through the plaza without stopping at barriers. Tolls are collected automatically with minimal human intervention.

The launch makes travel smoother on the busy Delhi–Jaipur corridor. NHAI also plans to introduce similar systems at the Shahjahanpur and Manoharpur toll plazas on the same route.

The Multi-Lane Free Flow framework uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology combined with FASTag-based electronic toll collection. Vehicles move at normal highway speeds while the system reads number plates and deducts fees in real time. This setup reduces queues and supports uninterrupted traffic flow.

Earlier, NHAI introduced the same system at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat and at the Mundka Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on the Urban Extension Road-II in Delhi. Those implementations showed clear benefits. Commuters saved time, used less fuel and produced lower emissions because vehicles no longer idled at toll points.

For smooth operation, users must maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts. In cases of insufficient balance or non-functional tags, the system issues an electronic notice. Users can pay the normal fee within 72 hours. After that period, the fee doubles. Persistent non-payment can lead to blacklisting of the FASTag and restrictions on other vehicle-related services.

The new system strengthens transparency in toll collection and lowers operational costs for physical plazas. It also improves overall efficiency across the network.

NHAI manages the development and maintenance of national highways across India. The rollout of Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling forms part of the government’s push to adopt advanced technology for easier travel and better infrastructure management.
