India Gifts 90 Electric Buses to Mauritius to Support Green Mobility

A major boost to sustainable transport: India gifts 90 e-buses to help Mauritius transition to clean public mobility.

India has gifted 90 electric buses to Mauritius as part of a government-to-government agreement to help the island nation shift to cleaner public transport.

The buses, manufactured by Switch Mobility in Chennai, India, will join the fleet of Mauritius National Transport Corporation. They form part of a larger plan that includes around 100 electric buses in total. The first batch of 10 buses was handed over earlier, and the remaining units will follow.

High Commissioner of India to Mauritius Anurag Srivastava formally handed over the buses to Mauritian Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The event took place at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Réduit.

Prime Minister Ramgoolam thanked the Government of India for the gift. He called it a sign of the strong and special relationship between the two countries and a shared commitment to a cleaner future.

The electric buses use advanced technology, including fast overhead flash charging that can recharge in about 15 seconds at selected stops. They produce zero tailpipe emissions and will replace older diesel buses on public routes.

This initiative supports Mauritius in cutting air pollution and reducing dependence on fossil fuels for transport. It also promotes sustainable mobility in line with global climate goals.

The gift strengthens bilateral ties between India and Mauritius. It builds on India’s development assistance programme and its “Make in India” efforts to share green technology with partner nations.

Switch Mobility, part of the Hinduja Group, made the buses under a contract facilitated by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL). The company sees the project as an example of Indian manufacturing reaching global markets.

India has supplied electric buses and clean energy solutions to several countries as part of its push for international climate cooperation. Mauritius, as a small island developing state, faces special challenges from climate change, and cleaner transport forms a key part of its response. This delivery adds to ongoing collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and capacity building between the two nations.
