Indian Railways Launches Country’s First LNG-Diesel Dual-Fuel DEMU Train in Ahmedabad

Indian Railways today flagged off the country’s first-ever LNG-diesel dual-fuel Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train from Ahmedabad, marking a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable rail operations.

The train, which can run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and high-speed diesel, was launched in the presence of senior railway officials and representatives from the Gujarat government. It has been modified at the Diesel Loco Shed in Sabarmati to operate on LNG as the primary fuel, with diesel as backup, offering up to 20–25% lower carbon emissions compared to conventional diesel-only DEMUs.

The dual-fuel system allows seamless switching between fuels based on availability and operational needs, making it suitable for short- and medium-distance passenger services. The train is equipped with advanced safety features, including leak detection for LNG, fire suppression systems, and real-time monitoring of engine performance.

Officials said the successful trial and launch demonstrate the readiness of LNG as a viable alternative fuel for non-electrified routes, especially in regions with good LNG infrastructure like Gujarat. The project was executed in collaboration with engine manufacturers and gas suppliers to ensure reliability and cost-effectiveness.

This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to reduce diesel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to expand passenger services across the network.
