Government Announces Seven New High-Speed Rail Corridors in Union Budget 2026

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today proposed the development of seven high-speed rail corridors linking major economic and urban centres across India, as part of efforts to promote environmentally sustainable passenger transport and act as long-term growth connectors.

The proposed corridors are:

  • Mumbai to Pune
  • Pune to Hyderabad
  • Hyderabad to Bengaluru
  • Hyderabad to Chennai
  • Chennai to Bengaluru
  • Delhi to Varanasi
  • Varanasi to Siliguri

These routes will connect key financial hubs, technology centres, manufacturing clusters, and emerging urban regions, helping to reduce travel times, ease congestion, and support balanced regional development. The announcement was made during the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27 in Parliament.

The government aims to build these corridors with a focus on speed, safety, and lower carbon emissions compared to conventional rail or road travel. Detailed feasibility studies, alignment planning, and funding mechanisms will follow to move the projects forward.

This initiative complements ongoing high-speed rail work, such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, and reflects India’s push to modernise rail infrastructure for faster, greener, and more efficient connectivity.

  1. Wow! Indian Railways is taking giant leaps in high speed technology. India is a major player in space technology. Now focus should be to manufacture indigenous aircrafts and export to the world. My dream is also to see that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are explored to its potential for its oil and natural gas, which will see India as a superpower in few years. Modi hai tho mumkin hai. Can India achieve the impossible?
