East Coast Railway (ECoR) has installed 600 kilometres of fencing along railway tracks to enhance passenger safety and reduce accidents.
The fencing covers vulnerable sections across its network in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. It aims to stop people from crossing the tracks and prevent animals from entering the rail corridor.
ECoR officials said the fencing has already shown positive results in lowering the number of track-related incidents. The zones with the highest risk received priority during installation.
A senior ECoR spokesperson stated that track fencing is a key safety measure. The official added that the project will help protect both passengers and train operations by limiting unauthorised access to the tracks.
The 600 km of fencing includes sturdy posts and wire mesh designed to last in different weather conditions. Work is complete on many critical sections, and the remaining stretches are in progress.
This large-scale fencing drive forms part of ECoR’s ongoing efforts to improve safety on one of India’s busiest railway zones. The zone handles heavy passenger and freight traffic, and incidents involving trespassing have been a long-standing concern.
Indian Railways has been expanding track fencing across different zones to reduce fatalities. Such measures, along with awareness campaigns and better underpasses or overbridges, aim to make rail travel safer for everyone. The East Coast Railway continues to focus on safety upgrades as it expands its network and increases train services.
