Uttar Pradesh Govt Approves ₹33,000 Crore Meja Stage II Thermal Power Project

Uttar Pradesh government has approved a ₹33,000 crore thermal power expansion project at Meja in Prayagraj district.

The project, known as Meja Stage II, will add 2,400 MW of generation capacity. It will feature three supercritical units of 800 MW each. The investment will be spread over the next five years.

The project is a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL). Both partners will hold equal stakes in the venture.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired the Cabinet meeting that cleared the proposal. Officials said the new units will use modern supercritical technology, which offers higher efficiency and lower coal consumption compared to older plants.

A government spokesperson stated that the project will strengthen power supply in the state. He added that it will support industrial growth and meet rising electricity demand in Uttar Pradesh.

The Meja Stage II expansion is located adjacent to the existing Meja Thermal Power Station. It will help the state reduce power shortages and ensure reliable electricity for homes, farms, and industries.

This large investment highlights Uttar Pradesh’s focus on expanding its power generation capacity. Thermal power continues to form the backbone of the state’s energy mix even as renewable energy projects are also being developed. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation phases. NTPC and UPRVUNL have successfully partnered on the first stage of the Meja plant, giving confidence for timely execution of this second phase.
