Indian Railways Approves New Lines, Doubling Projects and Safety Upgrades to Boost Capacity Across Multiple States

Indian Railways has cleared several major infrastructure projects aimed at increasing line capacity, improving safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing operational efficiency on critical rail corridors across the country.

The Railway Board has sanctioned the doubling of the Barbenda–Damrughutu section and the construction of 3rd and 4th lines between Damrughutu and Bokaro Steel City in Jharkhand. These works will strengthen the heavily used energy, mineral, and cement transportation corridor in the eastern region, helping move larger volumes of coal, iron ore, and other bulk commodities with greater speed and reliability.

Approved railway routes and projects

  • Barbenda–Damrughutu doubling and Damrughutu–Bokaro Steel City 3rd & 4th lines (Jharkhand)
  • Electronic interlocking at 34 Northern Railway stations
  • Rajpura bypass line (Punjab)
  • Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha doubling (Kerala)
  • Palakkad bypass project (Kerala)
  • Irugur–Podanur doubling on Chennai–Coimbatore corridor (Tamil Nadu)

In Northern Railway zone, electronic interlocking (EI) systems have been commissioned at 34 stations. This modern signalling upgrade replaces older mechanical and relay-based systems, allowing safer train operations, higher speeds, and increased train frequency on busy routes.

The Rajpura Bypass line has been approved in Punjab to ease congestion on the busy Ambala–Jalandhar section. Once completed, the bypass will divert a significant portion of freight trains away from the main line, reducing delays for both goods and passenger services in this high-traffic corridor.

In Kerala, two important doubling projects received the go-ahead. The Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha doubling will improve passenger and freight movement along the coastal route, while the Palakkad Bypass project is designed to cut down detention time for trains at the busy Palakkad Junction. Together, these initiatives will help decongest the state’s key rail network and support faster, more reliable services.

Tamil Nadu will also see major capacity enhancement with the approval of the Irugur–Podanur doubling. This project will convert the Chennai–Coimbatore–Podanur corridor into a high-capacity four-line section, enabling smoother handling of both passenger and freight trains on one of southern India’s most important routes.

Approved railway routes and projects (short list):

Barbenda–Damrughutu doubling and Damrughutu–Bokaro Steel City 3rd & 4th lines (Jharkhand)

Electronic interlocking at 34 Northern Railway stations

Rajpura bypass line (Punjab)

Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha doubling (Kerala)

Palakkad bypass project (Kerala)

Irugur–Podanur doubling on Chennai–Coimbatore corridor (Tamil Nadu)

All these projects form part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise its network, eliminate bottlenecks, and meet the rising demand for rail transport. They are expected to bring faster train movements, fewer delays, improved safety through advanced signalling, and better connectivity for industries and passengers in the respective regions.
