Ford Motor Company has confirmed plans to revive operations at its Chennai manufacturing plant, with production expected to resume from June 2026 after a multi-year pause.
The facility, which was placed on hold following Ford’s decision to exit passenger vehicle manufacturing in India in 2021, will be repurposed to focus on export-oriented production and component manufacturing. The company is working with its joint venture partner, Ford India Private Limited, to bring back skilled workforce and upgrade equipment for global supply-chain roles.
Ford officials stated that the restart aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to utilise existing assets efficiently while supporting India’s growing role in automotive exports and component supply. The plant is expected to initially focus on specific vehicle lines and powertrain components for international markets.
The revival is anticipated to create several thousand jobs in Chennai and surrounding areas, while also benefiting local suppliers and logistics partners. Ford has been in discussions with the Tamil Nadu government to secure necessary support for infrastructure, power, and incentives.
This move signals renewed confidence in India’s automotive ecosystem and Ford’s commitment to re-engage with the market through a revised business model.
