Centre Approves ₹472 Crore Road Over Bridge at Tuna-Tekra Port

Government has approved a ₹472 crore project to build a Road Over Bridge (ROB) and related facilities at Tuna-Tekra near Deendayal Port. This will improve cargo movement and support the new mega container terminal under construction.

The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved a ₹472 crore project to build a Road Over Bridge (ROB) and related infrastructure at Tuna-Tekra near Deendayal Port in Gujarat.

The project is expected to improve connectivity to the port area and support faster cargo movement as India expands its maritime capacity. It comes as part of broader efforts to modernise logistics and reduce delays in cargo evacuation.

According to a Press Information Bureau release, the project includes construction of a ROB, viaduct structures, a bridge over a creek, and supporting road links. Officials said the infrastructure will serve as a key access route to the upcoming Mega Container Terminal at Tuna-Tekra.

The terminal, currently under construction, has a planned capacity of 2.19 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year and an 18.33 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) berth. It is located near Deendayal Port and is designed to handle large vessels, serving trade routes across northern, northwestern, and central India.

“This project will strengthen port-led development and improve logistics efficiency,” said Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in a statement following the approval.

A road over bridge allows uninterrupted movement of vehicles over railway tracks or other obstacles, reducing delays and congestion. In busy port zones, such infrastructure helps ensure smooth cargo flow between terminals and inland transport networks.

The development forms part of efforts to expand capacity at Deendayal Port and ease pressure on existing facilities. It also aligns with national initiatives such as Maritime India Vision 2047, which focuses on improving port infrastructure and global trade connectivity.

For businesses and transport operators, the project could reduce turnaround time and logistics costs once completed. Workers and contractors involved in construction are also expected to benefit from new employment opportunities during the development phase.

However, some local concerns remain around temporary disruptions during construction, including traffic diversions near the port area. Officials said phased execution will be used to minimise inconvenience.

The project will now move to the tendering stage, with contractor selection expected soon. Construction is likely to begin in line with the progress of the container terminal, with full benefits expected once both projects become operational.
