Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for the ambitious ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Corridor project in Assam, a major initiative aimed at protecting wildlife, reducing human-animal conflict, and improving connectivity around Kaziranga National Park.
The project includes the construction of a 35-km elevated corridor along National Highway 37, which passes through the Kaziranga landscape. The four-lane elevated road will allow animals especially elephants, rhinos, and tigers to move freely beneath it, while vehicles travel above without disturbing the wildlife corridor.
The elevated structure will be 8–10 metres high in most sections, with underpasses and overpasses integrated to ensure safe animal movement.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi said the corridor is a “symbol of harmony between development and nature.” He highlighted that the project will not only protect Kaziranga’s biodiversity but also reduce road accidents involving wild animals and improve traffic flow for people travelling between Guwahati and Upper Assam.
The initiative is being executed under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with support from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the longest wildlife corridors of its kind in the country.
