India Post has significantly strengthened its role in delivering passport-related services to citizens by operating 452 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) spread across 23 Passport Seva Circles nationwide. This widespread network is making passport application, renewal, and related processes far more accessible, especially for people in smaller towns, rural areas, and remote regions.
POPSKs function as extended arms of the Regional Passport Offices and allow applicants to complete most passport services including fresh applications, renewals, tatkaal applications, document verification, police verification follow-up, and biometric enrolment right at their nearest post office. By eliminating the need to travel long distances to bigger cities, these kendras save time, reduce travel expenses, and lower overall inconvenience for citizens.
The initiative is part of the government’s continued efforts to bring citizen-centric services closer to the last mile through India Post’s vast network of over 1.55 lakh post offices. Each POPSK is equipped with modern infrastructure, trained staff, and secure digital systems linked directly to the Passport Seva portal, ensuring the same level of efficiency and security as regular Passport Seva Kendras.
Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and Department of Posts have described the expansion of POPSKs as a game-changer for passport delivery, particularly benefiting senior citizens, women, students, and residents of tier-2, tier-3 towns and rural areas who previously faced logistical challenges in accessing passport services.
With 452 operational centres already functional, the government continues to add more POPSKs in a phased manner to cover underserved districts and improve turnaround times for passport issuance.
