Delhi–Dehradun Expressway Completion Nears, High-Speed Corridor to Slash Travel Time to 2.5 Hours

The much-awaited Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, billed as a game-changer for connectivity in northern India, is now in its final stages and scheduled to open in January 2026, according to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha last month, Gadkari confirmed that work on the 210-km six-lane greenfield highway is advanced, with a revised completion target of January 2026. A small 70-metre service road stretch near Akshardham remains delayed due to litigation, but the main corridor is on track. Once ready, drivers can zip from Delhi to Dehradun in just 2.5 hours, down from the current 6-6.5 hours on congested routes.

The Rs 12,000-crore project, built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), features eco-friendly highlights like Asia’s longest 12-km elevated wildlife corridor through Rajaji National Park, plus animal underpasses and a tunnel to protect forests and wildlife. It will ease Delhi’s traffic jams, lighten the load on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and boost tourism to Uttarakhand’s hill stations and pilgrimage sites.

Trial runs have already started on key sections, including from Akshardham to Baghpat, giving a sneak peek of the smooth ride ahead. With spurs to Haridwar and links to the Char Dham highway, the expressway promises safer, faster journeys for commuters, pilgrims, and truckers alike.

As the finishing touches are applied, this green corridor stands out not just for speed but for balancing growth with nature making the hills feel closer than ever.
