PM Modi to Perform Bhoomi Poojan for Shillong–Silchar 4-Lane High-Speed Corridor, India’s First Access-Controlled Greenfield Expressway in Northeast

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lay the foundation stone for the 166-km Shillong–Silchar Corridor, the first access-controlled greenfield four-lane high-speed expressway in Northeast India. The ambitious project, with an estimated investment of around ₹22,860 crore, aims to transform connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam and unlock faster economic integration across the region.

The corridor will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. It will feature modern design standards with grade-separated interchanges, service roads, and state-of-the-art safety systems. Once completed, the expressway is expected to reduce the current road distance between Guwahati and Silchar and slash travel time from the existing 8.5 hours to approximately 5 hours. This significant time saving will benefit daily commuters, goods transporters, tourists, and cross-border trade with Bangladesh.

The project is anticipated to give a strong push to economic activity in Meghalaya, Assam, and neighbouring states by improving access to markets, industrial clusters, and tourist destinations. It will also enhance logistics efficiency, reduce vehicle operating costs, lower fuel consumption, and cut pollution along the heavily used existing NH-6 route.

The corridor passes through varied terrain, including hilly sections, requiring careful engineering to ensure safety, stability, and minimal environmental impact. Environmental clearances, land acquisition, and utility shifting are already in advanced stages to enable smooth construction.

The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony will be a major milestone for infrastructure development in the Northeast, where connectivity has historically been a key challenge. The government has prioritised several such high-impact road projects in the region to support faster growth, better integration with the rest of India, and stronger trade links with neighbouring countries.
