GAIL (India) Limited has successfully completed the laying of a major natural gas pipeline from Mumbai to Nagpur, running parallel to the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg (Maharashtra Samruddhi Expressway), under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan framework.
The 765-km pipeline, part of GAIL’s wider Urja Ganga and other regional networks, will supply clean and affordable natural gas to industries, commercial units, CNG stations, and domestic consumers in Vidarbha and surrounding regions. It is expected to significantly reduce reliance on expensive imported LNG and promote cleaner energy use in Maharashtra.
The project was executed with minimal land acquisition and environmental impact by utilising the existing right-of-way along the expressway, a key example of integrated planning under PM GatiShakti. This approach saved time, reduced costs, and ensured faster commissioning.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri congratulated GAIL and the Maharashtra government on the achievement, stating that the pipeline will support industrial growth, create jobs, and contribute to India’s target of increasing natural gas share in the energy mix to 15% by 2030.
The pipeline is now ready for commissioning in phases, with initial gas flow expected to begin in the coming months.
