NHAI Signs MoU with Reliance Jio to Deploy Telecom-Based Safety Alert System Across National Highways

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a telecom-based safety alert system, using Jio’s vast 4G and 5G network to send real-time warnings to drivers and save lives on the road.

This isn’t just tech for tech’s sake it’s about making highways less scary and more predictable. Travellers will get advance notices on their mobiles about tricky spots like accident blackspots, fog-prone zones, animal crossings, or sudden diversions.

Alerts will pop up via SMS, WhatsApp messages, or even priority calls, giving folks time to ease off the gas or switch lanes. NHAI says it’ll roll out in phases, linking up with their ‘Rajmargyatra’ app and the 1033 emergency helpline for seamless info flow.

Jio’s massive reach over 500 million users across India makes this a no-brainer. “By tapping into Jio’s digital backbone, we’re turning data into safety nets for millions,” an NHAI official shared. It’s all about proactive driving: spot the risk early, react smartly, and keep accidents down. With national highways seeing over 50,000 crashes yearly, this could be a real game-changer for families on the move.

The MoU was inked to boost overall road safety, fitting right into the government’s push for smarter infrastructure. No big costs for users just everyday phones doing heavy lifting. As highways expand under Bharatmala, expect this system to cover more stretches soon, making long drives feel a tad safer.
