ISRO Chief Says India to Launch First Space Station Module in 2028, Full Project by 2035

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan has confirmed that India is actively developing its own independent space station, with the first module planned for launch in 2028 and the complete station expected to be operational by 2035.

The Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS) will consist of five modules and will support long-duration human presence in low Earth orbit. The initial module will be launched using the LVM3 rocket, followed by additional modules delivered over the next few years using future launch vehicles.

Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, Chairman Narayanan explained that the station will enable sustained scientific research in microgravity, technology demonstration, and preparation for future deep-space missions, including lunar exploration and eventual human missions to Mars. The project is being designed with full indigenous capability in mind, from structural elements to life-support systems.

Work on critical technologies such as environmental control, power generation, docking systems, and crew transfer vehicles is already progressing at ISRO centres. The space agency aims to build on the experience gained from the Gaganyaan programme and the upcoming SpaDeX mission to perfect rendezvous and docking.

The announcement reaffirms India’s commitment to becoming a major player in space exploration, with the station serving as a national platform for science, industry, and international collaboration in the coming decade.
