ISRO Set to Launch Heaviest-Ever American Commercial Satellite BlueBird-6 on December 15

India’s space agency ISRO is getting ready for a historic moment: on December 15, its powerful GSLV-Mk3 rocket will carry the heaviest US commercial communications satellite ever launched by a foreign space agency. The satellite, called BlueBird-6, belongs to American company Astranis Space Technologies and weighs a massive 6,500 kg – almost twice as heavy as most satellites India normally puts into orbit.

BlueBird-6 is a next-generation geo-stationary satellite that will provide high-speed broadband internet across the United States and parts of the Pacific. Astranis chose ISRO because of its excellent track record and much lower launch costs compared to rockets from the US or Europe.

This will be the first time an American commercial satellite this big is riding on an Indian rocket. The launch is happening under the new “Launch Services Agreement” between Astranis and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm. The deal was signed earlier this year and is worth hundreds of crores.

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath confirmed the date and said everything is on schedule. The rocket is already at Sriharikota spaceport, and the satellite will arrive from the US in the first week of December. After testing, it will be placed on top of the GSLV-Mk3 (also called LVM-3) for the evening launch.

This mission shows how far India has come from launching small satellites a few years ago to now handling the biggest and most expensive commercial payloads for global customers. It also proves that Indian rockets are reliable and pocket-friendly, helping ISRO earn valuable foreign money.
