Indonesia Confirms Agreement with India to Procure BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles

Indonesia has officially confirmed it has entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral defence ties and modernising Jakarta’s maritime capabilities.

The announcement came from Indonesian Defence Ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait, who stated that the deal has been finalised to enhance the country’s military strength, particularly in coastal and sea defence. This makes Indonesia the second Southeast Asian nation after the Philippines to acquire the India-Russia joint-venture missile, known for its Mach 2.8 speed, 290-450 km range (depending on variant), and precision strike ability.

Negotiations between New Delhi and Jakarta had progressed over several years, with discussions intensifying during high-level defence dialogues. The agreement follows clearance from Russia – BrahMos Aerospace’s co-owner with a 49.5 per cent stake allowing technology transfer and export without restrictions. While the exact value and number of missiles remain undisclosed, earlier estimates placed potential deals in the $200–350 million range for shore-based and ship-launched variants.

The move aligns with Indonesia’s efforts to bolster deterrence amid regional maritime tensions and diversifies its defence procurement beyond traditional suppliers. For India, this represents another successful export milestone for the BrahMos system, boosting the country’s defence industry and strategic footprint in Southeast Asia.

Defence analysts view the deal as a sign of growing trust in Indian-made systems and a shift toward multi-aligned partnerships in the Indo-Pacific. It also opens possibilities for future follow-on orders and deeper cooperation in training, maintenance, and joint development.

The confirmation comes amid India’s expanding defence exports, with BrahMos already in service with the Philippines and interest shown by other nations. Both governments are expected to provide further details on implementation timelines and specific configurations in the coming months.
