Godrej Aerospace Emerges Key Contender in AMCA Engine Programme as GTRE Expands Safran Partnership

Godrej Aerospace has emerged as the leading private sector contender for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) engine development programme.

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under DRDO is strengthening its industrial partnership ecosystem for a new 110–120 kN thrust class engine. This engine will power the AMCA Mk-2 stealth fighter. Godrej Aerospace is seen as the primary Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) for this project.

GTRE plans to jointly develop the Advanced High-Thrust Class Engine (AHTCE) with France’s Safran Aircraft Engines. The collaboration follows years of talks on technology transfer and know-how sharing. Godrej Aerospace will play a major role in manufacturing critical components and supporting production.

Sources familiar with the programme said Godrej’s experience with the Kaveri engine project makes it a strong choice. The company has already delivered key modules and derivative engines for GTRE’s ongoing work.

A senior official noted that private industry participation is essential for scaling up aero-engine manufacturing in India. Godrej Aerospace brings proven capabilities in precision manufacturing, high-temperature materials, and complex aerospace components.

The new engine aims to meet the power needs of the fifth-generation AMCA fighter. It will support stealth features, supercruise capability, and advanced performance requirements. The partnership model combines GTRE’s research, Safran’s expertise, and Indian industry for production.

Godrej Aerospace, part of the Godrej Group, has grown its role in India’s defence sector. The company already contributes to several DRDO programmes, including work on the Kaveri engine. This latest development supports India’s goal of self-reliance in high-tech aero-engines and strengthens the country’s fighter aircraft programme through public-private and international collaboration.
