TCS and TPG Hypervault Investment of ₹18,000 Crore: A Massive Push for AI Data Centres in India

India’s IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has teamed up with global investment firm TPG to supercharge the country’s AI infrastructure. The two companies announced a joint venture on Thursday to invest up to ₹18,000 crore (around $2 billion) in equity into HyperVault, a new platform that will build gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres across India.

HyperVault will focus on creating high-tech facilities with liquid cooling and high-density setups perfect for power-hungry AI models. These data centres will serve big cloud providers (hyperscalers), AI companies, large businesses, and even government projects needing secure “sovereign” clouds where data stays inside India.

TCS will keep majority control with at least 51% stake, while TPG will put in up to $1 billion (₹8,820 crore) for a share between 27.5% and 49%. More money will come from debt, and the total project could go well beyond $6 billion as they add capacity over the next 5-7 years.

This is a big shift for TCS, which has always been “asset-light” meaning it didn’t own heavy infrastructure like factories or data centres. Now, with AI booming and companies needing massive computing power, TCS wants to become the world’s top AI-led tech services company. “We’re building the backbone for India’s AI future,” said TCS Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.

TPG’s Jim Coulter added that data centres are where green energy, tech, and real estate meet. Their investment comes through TPG Rise Climate, focusing on sustainable growth.

India’s data centre market is exploding from just 1.5 GW today to over 10 GW by 2030. Giants like Microsoft, Google, Adani, and Reliance are already pouring in billions. HyperVault aims to grab a big slice by offering cutting-edge, eco-friendly facilities.

This is TPG’s third partnership with the Tata Group, after deals with Tata Motors EVs and Tata Technologies. For TCS customers, it means faster, more powerful AI tools without relying only on foreign clouds.
