Indian Government Plans Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communication Tech to Cut Road Accidents

The central government is actively working to introduce Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology, which will allow cars to share real-time data on speed, braking, position, and other details to help prevent accidents on Indian roads, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday.

Speaking after the annual meeting of state transport ministers, Gadkari explained that the wireless system will enable vehicles to “talk” directly to each other without needing mobile networks. Drivers will get early warnings about sudden braking ahead, vehicles in blind spots, parked cars on highways, or hazards during fog common causes of pile-ups and crashes.

A joint task force has been formed with the Department of Telecommunications, which has agreed in principle to allocate 30 MHz spectrum in the 5.875–5.905 GHz band for V2V use. The technology involves fitting an on-board unit in vehicles, and standards are being finalised for rollout, starting with new cars and later extending to others.

Gadkari described it as a “revolutionary” step that could reduce accidents significantly, supporting the government’s target to halve road fatalities by 2030. The move comes amid India’s high road crash numbers, with over 1.7 lakh deaths reported annually.

This initiative adds to ongoing efforts like better bus safety norms and infrastructure upgrades, aiming for smarter and safer highways across the country.
