Burger King has introduced an AI-powered voice assistant named “Patty” that lives inside employees’ headsets at hundreds of its U.S. restaurants. Powered by an OpenAI base model, Patty serves as the voice for the company’s new BK Assistant platform, designed to help workers with daily tasks while also evaluating customer interactions for “friendliness.”
The chatbot allows employees to ask questions about menu preparation, recipes, or inventory in real time. It can alert managers when items are running low, flag operational issues like low stock in drink machines, or notify them about customer feedback submitted through QR codes. Beyond assistance, Patty listens to drive-thru conversations and tracks specific phrases such as “welcome to Burger King,” “please,” and “thank you” to measure politeness levels.
Managers can request friendliness scores for their location, helping them identify service patterns and provide coaching. Burger King’s chief digital officer, Thibault Roux, described the system as a coaching tool rather than a way to punish individuals. He explained that the AI was trained using feedback from franchisees and guests to recognize key words and phrases that indicate hospitable service. The company is also working to improve its ability to capture tone in conversations.
The BK Assistant platform, with Patty as its voice interface, is currently being piloted in about 500 U.S. restaurants. Both web and app versions are expected to roll out nationwide by the end of 2026, with plans to expand to Canada and other markets later.
The rollout has sparked debate about workplace monitoring and privacy. While Burger King stresses that the technology supports teams and reinforces hospitality without scoring individual employees, critics have raised concerns over constant surveillance in fast-paced restaurant environments.
